Fox has announced the cast for his next musical "Rent" live.
The recording artist Tinashe has been chosen as Mimi Marquez, a dancer who fights against addiction and draws the attention of musician and recovering addict Roger. Roger will be played by Brennin Hunt ("Nashville").
Singer / songwriter Jordan Fisher ("Hamilton" and the 2017 winner of "Dancing with the Stars") will play Mark, Roger's roommate and best friend, who serves as the show's narrator.
Vanessa Hudgens ("Grease: Live") will play Maureen Johnson, a performance artist and Mark's ex-girlfriend who is dating Joanne Johnson again. Kiersey Clemons ("Hearts Beat Loud") is scheduled to play Joanne Jefferson, a planter educated in the Ivy League.
Emmy Award-nominee and Tony Brandon Award winner Victor Dixon ("Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert") will play Tom Collins, a computer scientist who returns to New York after being expelled from MIT. There he meets and falls in love with Angel Dumont Schunard, who will be played by Valentina ("RuPaul's Drag Race"). Angel is a young drag queen and street percussionist who "embraces life and lives it to the fullest".
R & B and pop star Mario, who also stars in Fox's "Empire," will play Benjamin Coffin III, the former roommate who became the owner of Mark and Roger, and Mimi's ex, who has married rich people and now wants to gentrify the building in the one who once lived.
In addition, Keala Settle ("The Greatest Showman") will perform the iconic solo of "Seasons of Love" and will join the ensemble in the live musical.
Fox's version of "Rent" will be produced in 20th Century Fox Television. Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Julie Larson, Allan Larson and Vince Totino, Scott Hemming and Marla Levine of Revolution Studios will serve as executive producers. Michael Greif, who directed the original versions of "Rent" at the New York Theater Workshop and Broadway, will supervise the stage direction of the live musical, while Alex Rudzinksi will be the live television director.
In addition to Greif, members of the creative team from the original Broadway production of "Rent" returning for the television adaptation include casting director Bernie Telsey and costume designer Angela Wendt.
Kristoffer Díaz will write the adaptation for television; Al Gurdon will act as lighting director; Stephen Oremus will act as music director and producer; Jason Sherwood will act as set designer and Sonya Tayeh is the choreographer.
Larson's version of "Rent" was largely inspired by the opera "La Boheme" by Giacomo Puccini. He began working on the production in New York in 1993, and premiered on Broadway in April 1996. Larson could never see the success of play, since he died on January 25, 1996. The original Broadway career ended in 2008, with the final performance filmed and released in theaters and then on DVD as "Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway". The work also rejected production on tour, a 2005 adaptation of the big screen directed by Chris Columbus, and a revamped version that played Off-Broadway from 2011-12.
"Rent Live" will air live from Fox Studios in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
