TAMPA, Fla. (WTHR) – A petition has about 5,000 signatures urging the Maroon 5 band not to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The petition is aimed at supporting former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

According to Variety, the band had "quite accepted" the concert. Initially, the NFL approached the singer Rihanna, but she rejected the concert to show solidarity with Kaepernick.

"Colin Kaepernick has sacrificed his career in the NFL to denounce violent racism in the United States, and players across the country have followed suit," the petition states. "Rihanna, Jay-Z, Amy Schumer and others have refused to work with the NFL. Maroon 5: Americans look at artists and celebrities as leaders, and you have the opportunity to use your influence to take a stand. "

The petition has almost 49,000 of the 50,000 signatures needed.
