From 1911, two priests managed to unite two cities through a curious celebration around the devil. It is a carnival celebrating the return of peace to Riosucio, in Caldas.
Every strange year with chirimias, dances, cuadrillas, disguise and chicha celebrates without stopping for six days. But this year there is another concern in the air, one that has nothing to do with its mythological devil.
The younger ones have neglected their tradition. For many residents, their desire to dance more than listen carefully to the lyrics of the gangs where they satirically criticize unfulfilled promises, errors in local politicians, or any other problem they have criticized. Riosuceos feel dissatisfied.
To rectify this two years ago, the current meeting of the Carnaval Corporation of Riosucio is working to consolidate Carnival School, an initiative that seeks to encourage passion in children. This is stated by the president of the Carnival Board, Wilson Cruz.
"The Carnival School is the space where we want to educate young people in our tradition. We will teach oratory, matachinezca literature, masks, shawms. Everything that represents us is transmitted so that this party continues for many years"Cruz said.
For the board member, or the devil, who is nothing more than a myth and a symbol of joy, or the parties everywhere in the streets of the city, represents better the triethnic culture of the municipality. For him, without oral and texts, merriment would not make sense. "The rite, which is the gang and myth, which is devil, is our mark." This oral is what has made us different from other parties, therefore we work hard to remain in their purest essence despite adversity or external threats, "he said.
Orality is the tool that, at the rhythm of renowned songs, creates new letters that they require local and national rulers, citizens and even the church, all that plagues them.
To the rhythm of the Cuban son of the song "Hasta siempre" by the singer-songwriter Carlos Puebla, Jaime Diego Cataño, one of the oldest authors of the carnival, composed "Fantasía de la Escoria & # 39 ;.

But as a good lover of carnival, he has set himself the goal of being a promoter of the real meaning of this celebration. Cataño realizes that youth's disinterest is a "latent threat," but he is looking forward to the change that was presented to this issue. But this "threat", as it qualifies Cataño, applies not only to the old carnival. Young people who grew up loving this tradition also have their nausea.
"Many young people break the tradition, they have the discourse that old people should leave because they do not bring anything new to Carnival, but they are our libraries, and if we neglect the story, this celebration becomes a small-town present that is just for drunkenness", Mariana Arias, 22 year old and law student.
She is also the captain of older people and a member of the board of the gang committee, and in the pre-carnival held in 2018, her criticism was uninteresting by young people and egos.
Carnaval is in his blood, his grandfather had been a board member several times, a great uncle was a devil maker, and his grandparents were for many years a housekeeper, who received and fed all the members of the gang to support shakes.
