The fans of "Modern Family" react to the death of the character.

After more than a month of ridicule that a "significant character" would die in "Modern Family," many fans are less than impressed. On Wednesday's episode of the ABC comedy, it was revealed that DeDe's mother, Mitchell and Claire, died while asleep.

But DeDe, played by Shelley Long, only appeared on the show sporadically. In September, co-creator Christopher Lloyd claimed that an "important character in the series" would die, and that it would be "a moving event, and an event that has repercussions in several episodes."

The Halloween themed episode on Wednesday began when Mitchell and Claire learned that their mother, now divorced from her father, died peacefully while sleeping on a trip with her group of women.

At the beginning of October, the star of the "Modern Family", Ariel Winter, affirmed that death would not affect an "older person". She told ET: "It's a character that we'll all be sad to see, but it's probably not an older character that you think it will go in. We've never had a death in the program." Definitely, the family has an impact, as I believe. It affects any family, some people have never dealt with death or if it is a person close to them, they have to deal with them because it is a tragedy, and you follow the stories of people on how they do that and I think some people obviously they take it better than others. "

But DeDe is undoubtedly one of the oldest characters in the program. She is the grandmother of Ariel Winter's character, Alex.

Many fans guessed that perhaps Jay, DeDe's ex-husband and Mitchell and Claire's father, would be the ones to die. Some were relieved while others were disappointed, but most fans agreed that DeDe was not an important character.

Despite detractors who wanted more drama, DeDe's death is still not completely resolved, as Lloyd and Winter pointed out that the family will spend the next few episodes dealing with their pain.
