There is a lot of content for a single player, the movement speed of the game is faster and there are some unusual new mechanics introduced in the game that make it easier to counterattack when they are hitting you. Ironically, these new elements revolve around slowing down the game and emphasizing their defense options, but these elements serve to counter the return to a slightly faster movement speed and, hopefully, will help newer players get out of the ring so often.

There are two types of significant new movements in SCVI: the edge of the reverse and the lethal blow. When they are executed, both involve a great dramatic slowdown of the animation. Each character has different Lethal Hits that they can perform, and the results look impressive and striking, reminiscent of Tekken 7The movements in slow motion. Clearly, Bandai Namco has decided that slow motion fighting games look great, and it's not bad.

Learning which of a character's movements can result in a successful Lethal Hit slowdown, as well as the best time to do so, will take some practice. The investment edge, on the other hand, is easy even for a total Soul Calibur beginner. It only requires pressing a single button, and it is a good defensive move.

I have overcome all the Soul Chronicle stories and it took me between 10 and 12 hours, although there are still a couple of darker chapters, which I hope to unlock once I have completed Libra of Soul. In general, this feels like vanilla Soul Calibur: going back to basics, and welcoming like hell. If you have never played any entry in this franchise, this is a good place to start, as it will explain the whole story and teach you the movements of all the characters along the way. If you have not played a Soul Calibur from Dreamcast, you will find that this is a brighter and more friendly reboot for the beginners of its core concept (you will also be surprised that Ivy still wears the same technical attire as the Dreamcast version, except that she, uh, more grown up). If you have played all the previous ones Soul CaliburThis will feel like a nostalgic journey back in time, albeit a pink version, with the easiest buttons and the deceleration mechanics for beginners.
