Robert De Niro has separated from his wife, Grace Hightower, after more than 20 years of marriage.
A source close to the family tells PEOPLE that the two have separated and live separately.

The magician of lies The actor, 75, married Hightower, 63, in 1997, after having been dating for a decade. They share two children together: Elliott, 20, and Helen Grace, 6.
This is not the first time that the two have separated. De Niro filed for divorce in 1999 and became involved in a custody dispute over his son. The couple finally softened things and the divorce was never finalized.
In November 2004, the two renewed their votes against a list of people like Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Ben Stiller, Tom Brokaw and others.
A representative of De Niro did not immediately respond to PEOPLE for comment.
At that time, the Furious bull in jest, the actor referred to his previous marital problems and said he wanted to "make sure it stays".
The two were last seen on the red carpet in June, when they attended the 72nd annual Tony Awards in New York City. While De Niro has kept his private life out of the spotlight, he showed his softer side by talking about his family.

"There are great moments and moments of sadness," he said earlier to PEOPLE about raising their children. "Sometimes you're the last person you want to deal with, it's like when you take your kids to school and they get older and do not want to take your hand or say goodbye."
De Niro also has four other children: his daughter Drena, 47, and his son Raphael, 42, with his ex-wife Diahnne Abbott, as well as the twin sons of 23 years, Julian and Aaron, and his ex-girlfriend Toukie Smith
