LONDON – If one of the main duties of the royal family is to produce heirs, then Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex, are doing very well, thank you very much.
Kensington Palace announced Monday morning that the couple is expecting their first child in the spring of 2019.
Five months after their royal wedding televised internationally at Windsor Castle, Harry and Meghan continue to enjoy the glow of the warm honeymoon in the notorious British critic, where the news of a real baby on the road was greeted with cries of joy and in front. Page of headlines in the tabloids.
The American Markle has assumed his real duties as an experienced professional. It is prepared, it is adequate and, it is said, the queen loves it.
The red-haired Prince Harry, 34, is the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. Markle, 37, is a former actress.
His son, seventh in the line of succession, will be great-grandson of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. With Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Prince Harry in the line of succession, it is unlikely, given the modern medicine and longevity of life of the House of Windsor, that the baby will always be monarch.
But forget the throne, the arrival of Meghan and Harry's son will be great news in March or April.
A spokeswoman for Kensington Palace said the duchess was "in good health".
He added that Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, "is very happy with this beautiful news and hopes to welcome her first grandchild."
The reaction in the social networks was instantaneous and vertiginous. Within minutes of the announcement, #RoyalBaby had a worldwide trend.
Taking the time of the brief conversations about Brexit, the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, tweeted: "My sincere congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the happy news that they expect a baby in the spring, wishing all the best "
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, also intervened. "On behalf of the Londoners, I want to send our heartfelt congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the happy news they are expecting for their first child. Congratulations! #RoyalBaby, "he tweeted.
Many tweets were congratulatory, but some were also inquisitive. Some wondered if the baby would be American, British or both, while others wondered if the British could have an extra day of work. Cambridge
In Britain, you can bet on almost anything, and bookies rushed to suggest possible names for the newest real.
"Opening probabilities in the name of Harry and Meghan's baby," announced the Ladbrokes bookmaker, which included Victoria, Albert, Arthur and Diana as favorite names.
The couple landed on Monday morning in Sydney for a 16-day tour that begins in Australia, their first official real tour. The trip follows the tradition of Harry's parents, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, whose first real tour was to Australia and New Zealand.
There was speculation about a possible pregnancy when the royal couple emerged from their Qantas flight from London. Markle held several large purple folders in front of her, the kind of materials an assistant might otherwise handle.
The trip is his first trip abroad as a married couple and he understands the other part of his job: making "commitments" and supporting good works.
