The Barbie doll will be proud 60 years old in 2019 – and get its first real adaptation for the cinema. Margot Robbie becomes the title role and also stands behind the camera as a producer. This was confirmed by Mattel and Warner Bros. Pictures.
2019 becomes an exciting year in the history of Barbie dolls: Not only is the legendary toy celebrating its 60th anniversary, it is also filmed with real actors for the first time.
In the leading role: Margot Robbie, who received an Oscar nomination for her role as actor, Tonya Harding, in 2018. She will also follow the film as a producer.
Margot Robbie is honored to play Barbie
The actor is full of expectation to embody the famous doll. In Mattel's announcement, she explains: "Playing with Barbie promotes children's self-confidence, curiosity and communication skills while traveling to find themselves."
Barbie's 60-year history has encouraged children to imagine themselves as aspiring role models, from the princess to the president.
Margot Robbie continues, "I am so honored to play this role and produce a movie that I believe will have a tremendous positive impact on children and audiences worldwide."
Mattel and Warner Bros are also excited about film projects
Margot Robbie is not the only one who is already looking forward to the Barbie movie project. The toy and Barbie invents Mattel as well as the movie company Warner Bros. Pictures are also thrilled. Yelon Kreiz, CEO of Mattel, is enthusiastic, "Barbie is one of the most iconic franchises in the world, and we're excited to work with Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie to bring their lives to the big screen."
Toby Emmerich, Head of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, turns out to be less enthusiastic. In the message from Mattel, he praises: "Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on the screen in a fresh and relevant way for today's viewers."
