It is understood that Kate chose a relaxed, private birthday party this year with only her husband and their children, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, who is eight months old.
As a result Vanity FairKatie Nicholl's royal commentator held a "private" tea party to mark the occasion.
"Kate is not in big birthday celebrations, though [Prince] George and [Princess] Charlotte loves birthday cake, so it becomes a special tea party on the palace with candles and gifts, says one source.
Most of the day was spent within Kensington Palace without Prince William, who participated in a function celebrating 30 years of London Air Ambulance.
During the incident, William was announced as the cartridge of the air ambulance campaign # 30YearsSavingLives, so that he could "lose those who work on the front line and mark the importance of London Air Ambulance's vital work".
