Hair on the legs, arms, under the armpit, in the genital area: If a woman does not shave, she is often seen diagonally, faced with a lot of incomprehension and must explain. Because stubbly bone or long underarm hair is still considered in times of body positivity as ugly, as a taboo. It was also experienced by Laura Jackson from England. For a performance as part of her theater studies, the 21-year-old student had her body hair grown and renounced the usual shaving for her.
On Instagram she describes the experiences she did: "Some of it has been quite exhausting, other things have really opened their eyes to women's body hair. After using me for a few weeks I started to resemble my hair. I also liked that I didn't had to shave all the time. "At the same time, Laura noticed that people around her didn't understand why she didn't shave anymore.
"Then I realized that there is still so much to do to fully accept us," she writes. So came the idea for #januhairy inn, which, when freely translated, means "hairy January". In the first month of 2019, Laura and many other Instagramists will not have shaving, documenting body hair and the process of growing on Instagram, and encourage others to do the same.
In an Instagram post, Laura thanked her for supporting the family and her friends, but at the same time criticized her for defending herself repeatedly for not shaving her hair: "Although I surprisingly had to explain many times," Why am I showing where important it is to do it at all, "Laura explains, remembering her mother asked her," Are you just lazy or do you want to prove something to it? "
Waxing instead of waxing
This question obviously let Laura think: Why is one considered lazy if you do not want to shave? Why do you want to prove something to someone? She then explained to her mother that something you see over and over again becomes quite common – including body hair. And that's why Laura and many more people will show that body hair is normal and not unnatural or disgusting.
"This is not an angry campaign against people who do not understand that body hair is quite common. It is an empowerment project for everyone to better understand the vision of themselves and others, writes Laura. In addition, the 21-year-old adds a picture that she raises her arm , showing her armpit and smiling at the camera.
Laura is not called to shave, to let her hair grow and proudly present her own body hair, followed by many users on Instagram after just one week. During #januhairy has been connected to over 2,200 posts where proudly hairy legs, arms or armpit are held in the camera.
