The reason for the big increase in the US may have something to do with living in uncertain times, according to boxing experts.
"Everyone has talked about how internet streaming would kill the movie star, but it doesn't," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for ComScore.
"There may be something in the Sgeistist. This happened in the Great Depression. When it goes tough, people go to the movies. There is certainly an uncertainty in the political arena and in the world at the moment. It is escapism."
He added: "The key indicator for me is that many movies actually had terrible reviews, but they still did great business. People decided they wanted to go to movies anyway. It has only been an incredible year at the ticket office.
