Happy death day was one of last year's biggest horror surprises – a smart, funny, scary slasher rifle on Groundhog Day, about a woman who found herself caught in a daily loop where she was killed by a masked psycho. The sequel is called Happy Death Day 2U and will be published in February next year. First trailer is now released.
Jessica Rothe returns as an unfortunate student entree, apparently breaking the loop at the end of the first movie when she killed her murderous rival Lori. Unfortunately, as the trailer reveals, the loop has started again, with Lori somehow alive in it and out of revenge. It looks like another hugely entertaining blend of laughter and scares – see it below:
Happy Death Day 2U is written and directed by Christopher B. Landon, who also hell the first movie. There are also stars Israel Broussard (Fear the Walking Dead), Suraj Sharma (Homeland), and Ruby Modine (Shameless). It is once again produced by Blumhouse Films (Get Out, The Purge movies) and hits theaters on February 14, 2019.
In a recent interview with Collider, Rothe talked about how Happy Death Day 2U is not just a standard horror sequel. "Chris has done this incredible thing, where the sequel lifts the movie from being a horror movie to a genre movie that's back to the future," she said. "The sequel goes with us all the way from where we left, explaining many things in the first that was not explained and it promises everything.
"I was very happy to know that we should not just push all the buttons people loved the first time over and over again, because I think it's getting old."
