Comedian Bill Maher has responded to criticism he has been facing due to his recent comments about Stan Lee and Marvel Comics. Lee passed away about a week ago, and the world has been mourning his loss in several different ways. Many fans have been paying their respects on social media and making a sanctuary on their star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Black Panther Actor Chadwick Boseman even gave a musical tribute to the legend of the fallen comic.
While most people have been mourning Lee's death, Maher took a different approach, apparently criticizing Lee and the people who enjoy comics. In his recent comments, Maher seemed to completely forget what Lee did for the world, as well as writing comics that read:I do not think it's a great trick to suggest that Donald Trump could only be chosen in a country that believes comics are important. " Fans rushed to criticize Maher as the fans are still mourning the loss of their hero, and POW! Even the entertainment responded by calling their comments. "disgusting"And he mentioned that Lee often preached tolerance and respect." Since then, Maher has responded to the violent reaction he's been receiving, but it's not exactly what the fans expected to hear.

In a recent edition of Larry king now (via The envelope), Maher clarified his statement about Lee in Larry king now, explaining that what he said was not a criticism of Lee personally, but the idea of comic books and comic book movies. Maher explained further, "What I was saying is a culture that thinks that comics and comic book films are profound meditations on the human condition, it is a silent culture. And for people to get mad at that, just try my point"The entire segment of Maher talking about the controversy can be seen below.
While Maher has been getting a lot of heat from his recent comments, he is not the only one who criticizes people's reactions to Lee's death. Actor Armie Hammer had previously criticized fans and other actors for posting selfies of themselves on social media with Lee. While most people who shared an image of them with Lee shared only a good memory of Lee as their way of grieving, Hammer took it as people who tried to get more attention for themselves. However, the difference between Hammer and Maher is that Hammer has sincerely apologized for his comments.
Although Maher clarified his comments, it is likely that there are not many people on his side. There is no doubt that Lee can never be replaced, and that his characters and stories will always be part of the American culture. For people like Maher, the idea of comics and comic book films may not be important, but for other people, they allow them to escape the stress of their everyday lives in a way that makes them happy. Comics and movies are no different from any other type of entertainment, and they are incredibly important in society. As Lee once said, "Entertainment is one of the most important things in people's lives. Without that They could get out of the deep end. I feel that if you are able to entertain people, you are doing something good. " Well said Mr. Lee, well said.
