Elusive street artist Banksy wants his fans to know that his $ 1.4 million painting really self-destructed, and the auction house was not there, he said Wednesday.
"Some people think he did not really shred himself, he did it," the reclusa posted on Instagram. "Some people think that the auction house was in that. They were not, "he added.
Shortly after it was auctioned at Sotheby's in London on October 5, the work "Girl with a Balloon" slipped through the bottom of its frame and cut itself into pieces in front of the dazed onlookers.
The satirical dark humor then announced online that the remains had been renamed as "Love is in the container."
But the trick may have caused the value of the work to skyrocket, which led many cynics to believe that the anti-establishment artist was in connivance with the auction house.
Some have also speculated with the intention of Banksy to leave intact part of the canvas to intentionally increase the value of the work.
But the famous anonymous artist posted a video on Wednesday on his website, implying that the work should have been completely destroyed.
You can see a hooded figure constructing the mechanism in a studio during the nearly 3-minute clip titled "Crushing the girl and the balloon – The director's cut". Then the auction and partial crushing are shown.
"In the trials it worked every time …", the video points out.
The buyer of the piece, a European bidder, chose to keep the job.
