The weekend separation of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson may have seemed sudden, but PEOPLE has learned that the break was not the first time things had ended.
"They got on this front to be so happy, but there were a lot of fights and fights behind the scenes," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE of the singer of "Into You" and the Saturday night live Estrella, who recently finished her engagement after leaving since May.
A Davidson source tells PEOPLE that this was not the first time that the comedian, 24, and Grande, 25, separated.
"They have got into discussions, they have separated before and they have met again," says the informant.

People confirmed that Grande was supporting Davidson in a SNL Transmitted, only a few hours before the news of their separation was made public on Sunday. The two decided to end their engagement over the weekend, TMZ reported for the first time.
"It's definitely a new break, but they could be together again because who knows with those two," Davidson's source tells PEOPLE.
The separation of the couple occurs after Grande has endured a few difficult weeks when he reached an agreement with the loss of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller, who died of an apparent drug overdose on September 7. After expressing his emotional exhaustion with his Twitter followers, The Star took a while away.
"They are dealing with things that people would not have to deal with all their lives: an ex-boyfriend who has allegedly taken an overdose and has all this fame and attention," explains Davidson's source. "These followers and live their lives on social networks … it's a different world."

Although the fans were surprised to learn about the breaking news, a Grande source recently told PEOPLE that their inner circle is not. "It was too much too soon, it's not shocking to anyone," says the source.
